WiFi in the hood

This morning power got conked out in our neighborhood. The resultant frustration will come in another post, but during the power knockout, I was trying to get some work done with the laptop. When I went to a room that is in the corner of my house, my laptop indicated about 4 wifi connections available. Unbelievable, but true. FOUR WIFI CONNECTIONS just in my absolute vicinity. None of them had the default "linksys" or "netgear" SSID's. They had been given the SSID's and not only that, one of them even has the WEP encryption enabled. Thats when you know that the city is getting connected.

Just the other day when the VSNL guys came over to install my broandband connection, I had asked them about the number of connections they install everyday. He said about 30 residential connections in Ahmedabad. That figure was very disappointing. But then I discovered these four guys in the neighborhood having setup their WiFi, makes me feel a lot more optimistic.

(ps - the power was available in the bungalows that are next door to our apartment building, so I am guessing that the access points where located there)

On the same note - check this out - Bangalore unwire project - http://www.cxotoday.com/cxo/jsp/article.jsp?article_id=70986&cat_id=912. Interestingly, the article points out that the number of hotspots in Bangalore are over 200. Way to go!
