Is the desktop relevant?

What is the best way to find out whether the desktop is as important or relevant as it was a few years ago? To know the answer, you will have to answer another question: "Given a choice between a PC loaded with desktop applications but no internet connectivity or a PC with no desktop applications but a fat pipe to the internet, which one would you rather have?".

Without getting into the why/what or the "yeah, but....", let me tell you my answer: I'd clearly prefer a computer with only an internet connection rather than a desktop loaded with local applications but no internet access.

This is not an argument for/against the thin client or anything related to it. Its just like a "if you are alone on an island... " type of question. You get to make only one choice.

What do you guys think? What would you rather have?
