India internet usage numbers

Here are the various numbers related to internet use in India:

Profile of people surfing the net:
Graduates - 37%
Professionals - 29%
Postgraduates - 26%
Undergraduates - 8%

Average time spent online:
less than 10 minutes - 5%
10 to 20 minutes - 11%
21 to 30 minutes - 18%
31 to 45 minutes - 12%
46 to 60 minutes - 20%
61 to 120 minutes - 19%
more than 121 minutes - 18%

How they access the net
office - 53%
personal account - 37%
other - 10%
(these numbers seem a bit off)

In 2004, e-business in India was worth Rs 570 crore. The Internet and Online Association (IOA) estimates this will grow to Rs 2,300 crore by 2006, and keep growing by 300 per cent.

The Indian Railways Web site sells tickets worth Rs 6 crore every month. Now here comes the interesting fact: Only one in a thousand tickets is booked online.

India has 25 million internet users, of which 90% people log on to check email
