VSNL to join ranks of AT&T and MCI

7/25/2005 10:40:00 AM, posted by anand

The TATA group owned VSNL is buying Teleglobe for $239 million. This would catapult VSNL to the top-3 status in international wholesale voice telecoms, after AT&T and MCI. This deal would give VSNL network access in 240 countries and territories and interests or capacity in more than 80 subsea and terrestrial cables. Recently, VSNL also completed a $130 million purchase of Tyco International's global fibre-optic cable network unit, making it one of the world's largest providers of submarine cable bandwidth.

VSNL currently carries 3 billion minutes of traffic annually, whereas loss-making Teleglobe carries 13 billion minutes.
