I love stories about craigslist. They normally compare some online business with the craiglist model. Here is a story on CNet's News.com: What eBay could learn from Craigslist. Some fascinating facts about craigslist from the story:
  • no venture capital or equity markets (its a privately held company)
  • 10 million unique visitors each month
  • has sites for 120 cities in 25 countries
  • serves up 2.4 billion pages a month
  • profitable since 1999
  • 18 employees (eBay has 8,800 employees)
  • thinks and acts locally organizing listings city by city for merchandise, jobs, real estate, personals, events, volunteer opportunities and discussion forums
  • 99.2 percent of craigslist advertisements remain free
  • they dont spend a dime on marketing or promotions, all publicity is through word of mouth
