According to a session description of an O'Reilly conference:
Google searches 3 billion+ Web documents in 0.2 seconds hundreds of millions of times a day. Google serves hundreds of millions of highly targeted ads a day, exactly accounting for every click and impression.
Not that I am Google obsessed (ofcourse, some of my previous continuous google posts indicate otherwise), but seriously folks, just imagine what kind of infrastucture would it take to pull that one off. By infrastructure, I dont mean just hardware. Google is rumoured to have its own custom version of Linux enabled with their own clustering technology, besides some other specialized things.
