Software released as open source

So whats with all the software (read: dead software) being released as open source now? Are those companies hoping to capitalize on the open source hype? What happens when you release your product as open source, but the developer community that actually works on that product/project is missing? The product is still dead and no one gives a damn about it. Do those management guys think that this open source release is magically going to give them some creditability among open source community?
